    Bundarra Berkshires

One trotter onto Lauren and Lachy Mathers’ farm and you know straight away how much passion and love the pair have for their pigs and the farm. Paddocks dotted with red gum trees, the occasional black pig rooting about in the grass and a funky little farmstead butchery are just a few of the incredible sights that the Mathers family are very proud of creating and sharing.

“Bundarra” is 100 acres of old floodplain-farmland on the Murray River, just outside of Barham. Lauren and Lachy began their journey with Berkshire pigs (pronounced Baark-shir; you have to say it with a Pommy accent see, like their place of heritage) after meeting their first sow named Doris in 2010 when Lauren co-owned the local food store; the simple idea was to eat yummy little pastured pigs on the menu.

Once they tasted the pork though, strange and exciting things started to happen on the farm. The following years were hard yakka sourcing breeding stock, having babies (two-legged human ones as well as four-legged porcine ones) and getting the farm up to scratch. Little did they know that just a few years on in 2014, they’d be butchering their pigs and having a crack at making the best charcuterie and smallgoods in the country, right next to where their pigs happily graze.

Get to the markets early for their bacon – it’s a showstopper!!

    Barham Avocados

Barham Avocados is a fourth-generation family business, based on an 800-hectare farm – Horseshoe Bend – which is located just outside Barham. Katrina and her husband, Tim – with their young family in tow – lovingly tend to the same paddocks that four generations of Katrina’s family have cared for before them. Tim and Katrina’s hands-on approach to farming, their knowledge of the land and their family’s heritage can be seen in the quality of their fruit – Barham Avocados’ avos are the most delicious ones around!

Barham Avocados grow four varieties of yummy avos at Horseshoe Bend. All are pesticide-free, and picked and packed by hand.  Avocado season starts in June or July when you can say ¡Hola! to the Mexican varieties. The Bacon – smooth-skinned, pea-green and nutty-flavoured – is the first cab off the rank, followed by the slender-necked Fuerte in July or August. The familiar rich-tasting Hass, with its rough, dark green skin that deepens to royal purple as it ripens, is generally available during October and November, and then the farm’s specialty: the creamy, emu egg-shaped Reed sees you through the rest of summer from January and February. Recently Tim and Katrina also started making their own cold-pressed avocado oil, perfect to use for cooking and in dressings and also topically as a beauty product.

Be sure to try their delicious Reed avocados, they’re a local favourite!

    Restdown Wines

Restdown Wines are completely handmade from vine to bottle in Restdown’s purpose-built, underground winery. Their uniqueness reflects the attention given to the vines during the growing season, through the use of organic fertilisers and sprays and the pride taken in creating distinctive, limited release wines.

"At Restdown we have adopted a 'slow wine' philosophy in both our winemaking and our wine consuming, allowing the wines to express the full character of the grapes and the area within which they are grown. Minimal human intervention is our focus, so we never use chemical fertilisers and pesticides, use straw mulch to control weeds and conserve water and add minimal amounts of preservative to our wine."

"Many of our regular customers find that they can enjoy our wine without the allergic reactions they often experience from heavily sulphured wines). Egg white fining is used only when absolutely necessary, with no chooks ever being harmed in the winemaking process!"

    Jo Hearn, Winemaker

Restdown became fully certified organic in 2015 – another great reason to get your hands on some of the good stuff!

Get your hands on their Rose which is highly acclaimed by none other than James Halliday himself.

Over 60 years ago Walter John and Winifred Ruth Williamson purchased a sandhill at Barham. They built their home nearby and named the property Kurrnung. Their son, Philip, together with his wife Sandra, developed Kurrnung into a highly productive, 290-acre citrus orchard.

In 2012 Philip and Sandra, along with their daughter Emma, further expanded the Kurrnung orchard to include an on-farm processing and bottling plant capable of producing 2,000 litres of juice per hour and – The Great Australian Squeeze was born.

Today the fourth generation of the Williamson family is growing up on the property and the established orchard consists of Navel and Valencia oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes and produces more than 6,000 tonnes of fresh Australian citrus fruit each year.
